Big Zion African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church invites the community to join the Congregation on Sunday, July 5, 2009 in honor of the life and legacy of Walker James Carroll (1910-1999), a faithful member and education leader.  The Walker J. Carroll Day will come on the heels of a celebration of Mr. Carroll’s life and work by the Baldwin County Training School Heritage Fest Scholarship Foundation during the Museum Dedication Weekend, July 1-3, 2009.  Big Zion extends an invitation to all visitors to come and worship with the church where Mr. Carroll faithfully served.  He will be recognized during the 11 a.m. worship service.

Early in Mr. Carroll’s 42-year career in education, he served as a teacher at Mobile County Training School in Mobile.  He went on to serve as principal of Baldwin County Training School from 1938-1970.  As a graduate of Dunbar High School and Alabama State University, Mr. Carroll served the students and citizens of our area on both sides of the Bay.

     Just as he provided guidance in the classroom, he provided spiritual leadership at Big Zion and within the A.M.E. Zion church as a member of the board of trustees and as secretary-treasurer of the Mobile District Central Committee.
